What Is MCP, and Why Ecommerce Sellers Should Care

Model Context Protocol is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect directly to your tools and data. Here's what that unlocks for an ecommerce business.

The problem MCP solves

Before MCP, every AI tool that wanted to connect to an external system (your store's database, a spreadsheet, a marketplace API) needed a custom-built integration written specifically for that AI tool. Multiply that by every AI assistant and every system a seller might want connected, and you get a huge amount of duplicated integration work that mostly benefits large platforms with the engineering resources to build it.

Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard, changes this by defining one common way for an AI assistant to discover and call tools, regardless of which AI model or which system is on the other end. Build an MCP-compatible connector once, and any MCP-compatible AI assistant can use it.

What this means in practice for a seller

If your inventory system, your marketplace seller dashboard, or your analytics tool exposes an MCP connector (or a developer builds you one), any AI assistant that supports MCP can read live data from it and act on your behalf, without a bespoke integration having to exist first. Practically, this looks like asking an AI assistant "what's my current stock on the top 10 SKUs" or "draft a reply to this customer using our actual order history" and getting a real, current answer instead of a generic one, because the assistant can actually reach your data.

Where this is heading

As more ecommerce platforms, marketplaces and internal tools add MCP support, the AI tools a seller already uses become more capable without needing a separate integration project for each new connection. This is still an early, fast-moving standard, so today's guide is a starting point, not a final picture, we'll update this as MCP support becomes more common across the tools Indian sellers actually use.

What to do about it today

You don't need to build anything yourself to benefit from MCP right now. The practical action is to check whether the AI assistant and the business tools you already use both support MCP, since that combination is what unlocks the direct-connection benefit described above, and to keep an eye on this category as it matures.
