The Prompt Formula That Works for Ecommerce Tasks

Generic prompts get generic output. A reusable formula that gives an AI tool the context it needs turns vague output into something you can actually use.

Why most first attempts at prompting disappoint

A prompt like "write a product description for my shoes" gives an AI model almost nothing to work with, so it fills the gaps with generic, average-sounding text. The model isn't bad at the task, the prompt just didn't give it enough to be specific.

The four things a good ecommerce prompt includes

Context

Who is this for, and in what voice? "You are writing for [brand name], an ecommerce brand selling [product category] to [audience], in a [tone] voice" does more work than any other single addition to a prompt.

The actual details

Paste the real product specifics, not a vague description. Material, sizing, price point, what makes this specific item different from similar ones. The model can only be specific if you give it something specific to work with.

Format

Tell it exactly what shape the output should take: "5 bullet points under 200 characters each," "a 3-line Instagram caption," "a formal email reply." Without this, you'll often get a format that doesn't fit where you need to paste it.

Constraints

What to avoid matters as much as what to include. "Avoid exclamation marks," "don't use the word 'premium'," "stay under 150 words" prevents the most common generic-AI-writing tells.

A template you can reuse today

"You are writing [task] for [brand name], an ecommerce brand that sells [product category] to [audience]. The tone is [tone]. Here are the product details: [paste details]. Write it for [platform], in [format], under [length]. Avoid [things to avoid]."

One habit that improves every prompt over time

Keep a running note of prompts that worked well for you, and reuse and adapt them rather than starting from scratch each time. Over a few weeks this becomes your own personal prompt library, tuned to your brand's voice specifically, which is more valuable than any generic prompt list.
