Automation Tools Worth Connecting to Your Shopify Store

n8n, Make and Zapier compared for connecting Shopify, marketplaces and marketing tools together, with a straight answer on when each one makes sense.

How we cover this: these picks reflect our own research and hands-on experience running ecommerce brands, not paid placement. Links currently point to each product's own site. Some may become affiliate links in future, which would be disclosed here at that point. Pricing and features change, always confirm current details before buying.

Once a store has more than one system talking to another, whether that is Shopify to a Google Sheet, or a new order triggering a WhatsApp message, a no-code automation platform saves real hours compared to doing it by hand. This is a straight comparison of the three most common choices, not a how-to guide, for that see the AI Hub.

n8n

Open-source and self-hostable, which means you can run it on your own server for full control over where your ecommerce data goes, an increasingly relevant point given how much customer data flows through these tools. The trade-off is a steeper setup than Make or Zapier if you choose to self-host, though n8n also offers a hosted cloud version if you want to skip that step. Detailed how-to guides live in the n8n section of the AI Hub.

Make (formerly Integromat)

A visual, drag-and-drop builder that sits between n8n's flexibility and Zapier's simplicity. A common starting point for sellers new to automation who still want to see the full logic of a workflow laid out visually, rather than Zapier's more linear step-by-step format. See the Make section of the AI Hub for setup walkthroughs.

Zapier

Has the largest library of app integrations of any of the three, which makes it the easiest starting point if the specific apps you use are not well supported elsewhere. Pricing scales quickly with the number of tasks you run per month, which matters once your automations are handling real order volume rather than occasional workflows.

At a glance

Platform Best for Self-hosted option Learning curve
n8n Full data control, complex logic Yes Medium to high
Make Visual workflow building No Medium
Zapier Widest app integration library No Low

How to choose

If data privacy or cost at scale is your main concern, n8n is worth the steeper setup. If you want the fastest path to your first working automation and your apps are well supported, start with Zapier. Make is the reasonable middle ground if you want to see your workflow logic visually without n8n's technical overhead.
