Lighting Setups for Shooting Clean White-Background Product Photos at Home
Lighting affects a catalog photo more than the camera does. These setups get you consistent, marketplace-compliant product shots without a studio budget.
Most inconsistent, flat, or shadow-heavy product photos are a lighting problem, not a camera problem. Marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart also have specific white-background compliance requirements that are much easier to hit with the right lighting setup than by fixing shadows in editing afterward.
Two-softbox setup
A pair of softboxes positioned at roughly 45 degrees on either side of the product is the standard, reliable setup for even, shadow-minimized white-background shots. Continuous LED softbox kits are affordable, widely available, and do not require flash-sync knowledge the way strobe lighting does, making this the right starting point for most sellers.
Ring light
Better suited to talking-to-camera content and close-up beauty or accessory shots than full product catalog photography, since a single ring light source can create a visible circular catch-light reflection on shiny or reflective products like patent leather footwear. Useful as a second light source alongside a softbox setup, less useful as the sole light for catalog work.
Light tent (photo cube)
A collapsible fabric cube with diffused walls that a product sits inside, lit from outside. A fast, low-skill way to get evenly diffused light for small products, though it constrains the size of what you can shoot and makes larger items like full garments on a mannequin impractical.
Natural window light
Free, and genuinely good for lifestyle-style shots when diffused through a sheer curtain, but inconsistent by time of day and weather, which makes it a poor choice for a catalog that needs uniform lighting across dozens of SKUs shot over multiple sessions.
